With the help of Shashank Singh devastating punches, Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans in a thrilling final over to capture their second IPL 2024 title.
Short Score : Gujarat Titans 199/4 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 89*) lost to Punjab Kings 200/7 in 19.5 overs (Shashank Singh 61*) by 3 wickets
First Inning :
Gill discovered that the others were performing admirably on the other end. Even while Wriddhiman Saha and Kane Williamson—who was substituting for the injured David Miller in his first IPL 2024 match—did not stick around for very long, they were able to piece together stands valued at 29 and 40.
Playing with more purpose this time, Sai Sudharsan at one point match Gill shot-for-shot in his 19-ball 33 that included six boundaries. However, he led Harshal Patel to the wicketkeeper, ending his cameo.
Gujarat needed a spark going into the final overs, and Rahul Tewatia delivered, although while savoring some amicable full tosses that helped him reach an 8-ball 23.
And even though Gill was 11 runs short of a century, his team had reached over 200, which would prove to be far more than just a challenge for Punjab Kings.
Second Inning :
Punjab was still in the chase after losing Shikhar Dhawan early on when he chopped off Umesh Yadav’s opening ball because of Jonny Bairstow’s early barrage of boundaries. The opening started by regularly pinging the cover boundary, with Azmatullah Omarzai providing some width.
The daring Prabhsimran Singh gave him some encouragement, but things quickly turned around. To startle Punjab, Noor Ahmed bowled Bairstow through the gate with his opening ball and had Singh caught at point off an outside edge.
Punjab then found enough firepower in their lower middle-order to clinch a thrilling victory. The impact substitute Ashutosh Sharma, who equaled Singh in shotmaking and hit three boundaries off an over from Azmatullah Omarzai, was the last trick the Punjab Kings had up their sleeves.
With every batter hitting Mohit for a six with sheer force, the pair also scored eighteen runs off the penultimate over that he bowled. Darshan Nalkande, who hadn’t bowled an over before, was assigned the final over when the equation boiled down to seven.
Singh had good fortune as he managed to get an outside edged boundary before cleverly slipping a leg-bye off the penultimate ball, even though he dismissed Sharma caught at far on.
The game, which had normally moved along on a straight path with the Titans leading all the way until the Kings crept back in, came to an exciting finish as a result.
